Who we are

Currie Communications Ltd. is an Edmonton-based company with a reputation for excellence in event management and for bringing more to the table than just logistical skills. Currie Communications Ltd. has been in business for the past 24 years. It is the longest standing event management company in Edmonton with the original owner still in place and active.

Over the past 24 years, we have established a solid reputation in the Edmonton business community for our creativity and our strong organizational ability. We have also earned an excellent reputation for understanding an organization’s strategic objectives and being able to translate those objectives into the events we manage. Because of our ability, we bring more than logistical value to our clients’ events.

A testament to our ability is that Currie Communications Ltd. has received the following awards:

Premier’s Award of Excellence for its work on the annual Canada Career Week Fair hosted by Alberta Employment and Immigration and Service Canada.

Edmonton Tourism’s You’re Welcome Award for outstanding Meeting and Event Services.

Canadian Event Industry Awards for Best Conference and National Finalist for Best Fundraising, Best Trade Show, Best Corporate Team Building and Producer of the Year.

The Company presently has a staff complement of three full-time employees and two subcontractors who work on an exclusive basis for Currie Communications. The owner of the company, Joan Currie, has over 35 years of experience in event management, professional services marketing, communications, sponsorship, and public relations. Prior to forming Currie Communications, Joan Currie was Director of Development for Edmonton Opera and Director of Marketing for Deloitte & Touche, chartered accountants (now Deloittes). In 2014, Joan was nominated by the Royal Bank of Canada for their prestigious “Entrepreneur of the Year” Award.

1993

After 15 years in the corporate world, Joan Currie establishes an event management company catering to public and private industry clients.

1997

Joan Currie is named Chair of the Board of Directors for the Alberta Women’s Enterprise Initiative Association, a provincial association for assisting Alberta women start and grow their businesses. AWEIA has a $5 million business loan fund.

1999

Currie Communications is invited to teach an event management course to Grant MacEwan College public relations students and wins the management of the 8th International Conference on Thinking which attracted 1000 delegates and 206 speakers.

2000

Currie Communications wins the Kids Kottage gala concept competition and establishes the Kids Kottage gala into one of Alberta’s most successful fund raising events, netting $300K for the Kids Kottage Foundation.

Currie Communications receives national recognition from the Canadian Event Industry Awards as one of the three finalists for the Best Fund Raising Award and as runner-up for the Producer of the Year award.

2002

Currie Communications receives national recognition from the Canadian Event Industry Awards for winning Best Conference and as one of the three finalists for the Best Corporate Team Building Award.

Currie Communications receives provincial recognition winning a Premier’s Award of Excellence and wins the coveted Alberta Science and High Technology (ASTech) Leadership Awards program, one of Alberta’s most prestigious awards galas. Currie Communications was re-contracted for the 2004 – 2006 and the 2007 – 2009 ceremonies. Currie Communications celebrates 10 successful years in business.

Currie Communications wins the Edmonton Tourism “You’re Welcome Award” for outstanding Meeting and Event Services and wins the Canadian Olympic Committee Gold Medal Plates gala fund raising contract.  Edmonton is chosen as one of eight Canadian cities to host this prestigious national event.

Currie Communications is awarded the Alberta Heritage Foundation of Medical Research’s prestigious 25th Anniversary Founders & Builders dinner and international Inukshuk conference.

2006

Currie Communications is awarded Syncrude Canada’s UE-1 Plant grand opening Ceremonies in Fort McMurray, Calgary and Edmonton, The Learning Partnership’s first Western Tribute fund-raising dinner and the Junior Achievement’s Business Hall of Fame Awards.

Currie Communications Ltd. is awarded Syncrude Canada’s Aboriginal Review Launch, and the National Alberta Research Ethics Consensus Committee Conference. Currie Communications Ltd. moves to commercial space located at 202, 10471 – 178 Street, Edmonton, Alberta.

2008

Currie Communications Ltd. is awarded the Alberta Emerald Awards Foundation annual awards gala, the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research first Alumni conference, exclusive management of Careers: The Next Generation’s events, the management of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction’s first “Courses Between Courses” bi-annual dinner, and the City of Edmonton’s flagship recognition event, The Salute to Excellence Awards.

Currie Communications Ltd. is contracted to manage the second bi-annual Canadian Institute of Steel Constructors Steel Advantage Awards, Collins Steel 25th Anniversary and Sorrentino’s 2010 Annual Garlic Stomp.

Currie Communications Ltd. is awarded Imperial Oil’s Kearl project Stakeholder Relation events in Fort McKay and Fort Chipewyan.  Currie Communications is re-contracted for the Alberta Innovates Health Solutions 2010 and 2011 Making Connections Conferences.  Currie Communications Ltd. is awarded Supreme Steel’s annual client appreciation reception and Eskimo Steel’s business development work.

Currie Communications Ltd. will be managing the Canadian Institute of Steel Constructions Steel Advantage Awards, Alberta Chamber of Resource’s 75th Anniversary Awards, City of Edmonton’s 60th Anniversary Hall of Fame Awards, the inaugural Arctic Grayling Symposium, and Alberta Liquor and Gaming Commission’s national conferences.

2012

Currie Communications Ltd. will be managing the Syncrude Canada’s Aboriginal BBQ’s, the Bennett Architect 30th Corporate Anniversary Open House, and the Edmonton Police Foundation True Blue Gala. Currie Communications is re-contracted for the Alberta Innovates Health Solutions 2012 Making Connections Conference, the Alberta Employment and Career Fair (formerly the Canada Career Week Fair), and the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction Alberta Region Steel Workshop.

2013

Currie Communications Ltd. is awarded Imperial Oil’s Kearl project opening Community Celebration, the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency Future Fare, and the Urban Development Institute Alberta Conference.
