Joan Currie


As President and Founder of Currie Communications Ltd., Joan has been providing independent event management and communications services to a wide range of clients for over 25 years and has over 36 years of industry experience. Joan works directly with each of her clients to determine their unique needs and goals for each project, translating each client’s overall objectives into a unique event. Her creativity and attention to detail ensures that each event is successful and well-organized from start to finish.

Joan’s portfolio includes event management for small to large businesses, including trade shows, conferences, symposiums, fundraising galas, award shows, anniversary celebrations, opening ceremonies, seminars, information fairs, auctions, employee recognition events, political fundraisers and more. Joan is highly experienced in developing strategic plans, critical path documents and budgets to address each event’s varying requirements.

Joan’s experience includes roles such as Director of Marketing for Deloitte & Touche and Director of Development for Edmonton Opera. Her educational background includes a Diploma in Journalism and Public Relations from Mount Royal College and formal education in Women’s Studies from the University of Alberta.


Patricia Eckely, CSEP

Senior Client Manager

Patricia, joined Currie Communications Ltd. in 2012 as a Client Manager. Patricia brings with her 13 years of professional work experience in the event management industry and has her CSEP designation (Certified Special Events Professional). She is also a graduate of NAIT`s Special Event Management and Office Administration programs.

She is a member of International Live Events Association (ILEA) – Edmonton Chapter, and serves on the Board as the VP–Education.  Prior to joining Currie Communications, Patricia worked as a Client Services Manager for Northlands Edmonton, where she had the opportunity to work on a diverse list of client events including tradeshows, conferences, galas, banquets and meetings. As an Administrative Assistant for the national Canadian Patient Safety Institute she also had the opportunity to work on many internal events including conferences, AGMs, meetings, workshops and other event marketing projects.”


Bev Hempel


Bev has over 20 years of experience in event planning and management, with a specialization in the practical aspects of events, meetings, workshops and conferences. As Senior Manager, Bev works directly with Joan to ensure that each event is planned to perfection and that all details and requirements are managed as per the client’s needs.

Her portfolio includes event management projects such as the following: Registered Apprenticeship Program Awards, YWCA Edmonton 100 Year Celebration, Syncrude 30th Anniversary Celebrations, Supreme Group Customer Appreciation Event, You’re Welcome Edmonton Awards, Gold Medal Plates Fundraiser, Excellence in Teaching Awards, Order of the Bighorn Awards, Canada Career Week, Building Tomorrow Today Conference, Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research, Inukshuk Conference, Alberta Economic Development Seminars, and City of Edmonton’s Salute to Excellence Hall of Fame Ceremonies.

Bev’s education includes Administrative and Events Management programs from NAIT and Grant MacEwan Community College. She brings excellent organization skills and a strong attention to detail to the Currie Communications team.


Rick Newcombe

IT administrator

With 26 years of experience in information technology, Rick Newcombe brings a wealth of technical knowledge to the Currie Communications team. As IT Administrator, Rick ensures that the company’s systems are running smoothly while also providing troubleshooting and IT support on an ongoing basis.

A Microsoft Certified Professional and Certified Novell Administrator, Rick’s education includes a Certificate in Computer Programming and a Project Management Certification from NAIT. He specializes in database maintenance, web applications, social marketing, server administration and IT support, among other things.
